Noong nakaraang linggo nanghina ako nang mabasa ko ang isang kolum sa Philippine Daily Inquirer kung saan inilahad ng manunulat na maraming mga batang kababaihan na edad 12-14 taong gulang ang nagbebenta ng kanilang katawan para lamang sa halagang P300! Nangyayari ito sa Tondo at ang kanilang mga customer ay ang mga driver at kargador ng mga truck sa pier. Sabi pa nu’ng artikulo ay karaniwang sa likod lamang ng truck nangyayari ang pagtatalik nila at nakakatatlo hanggang apat na lalaki sa isang gabi ang bawat isa sa mga kabataang ito. Alam naman nating lahat na nangyayari ito dahil sa kahirapan na nararanasan ngayon ng marami sa ating mga kababayan lalung-lalo na ang mga maralitang taga-lungsod. Kaya naman talagang nakakagalit ang mga nababalitaan nating mga grabeng korapsyon at pagnanakaw na nangyayari sa hanay ng ating militar partikular na ang mga kaso nina dating Armed Forces of the Philippines (AFP) Comptroller General Carlos Garcia at Jacinto Ligot.
Marahil wala na talagang konsensya ang dalawang ito dahil sa gitna ng paghihirap ng milyun-milyong mga Filipino ay nakuha pa nilang nakawan ng mahigit 1 bilyon ang ating bayan! Sabi nga ni Senador Franklin Drilon ay mahigit P700 milyong piso ang nakuhang halaga ni Ligot sa kanyang ilang taong panunungkulan bilang AFP Comptroller. Hindi pa kasama rito ang mga bahay at lupa sa Amerika at dito sa ating bayan na pagmamay-ari rin ng pamilya nila.
Sa kaso naman ni Garcia, ang anak pa nito ay tila hindi na nahiya na ipinagmamalaki pa ang kanilang kayamanan sa mga kaibigan at kakilala nito sa New York. Ano ba namang klaseng tao ang mga ito? Ganito na ba talaga ka-manhid at ganid ang ilang mga pinuno sa ating militar? Kung nailagay lamang sa tama ang pondo ng bayan ay marahil mas maraming maayos na serbisyo ang maibibigay ng ating pamahalaan sa ating mga maralitang kapwa Filipino. Marahil hindi na kailangang magbenta ng katawan at masira ang kinabukasan ng marami sa mga kabataang Filipino. Sa totoo lang, ang hiling ko lamang para sa mga walang konsensyang mga pinuno tulad nina Garcia at Ligot ay sana kunin na kayo ni Lord!
Sa magandang balita naman ay patuloy pa rin ang pag-iikot ng Kaya Natin! sa iba’t ibang mga paaralan upang iparating sa ating mga kabataan ang kahalagahan ng tapat at mabuting pamamahala para sa kinabukasan ng ating bayan. Noong nakaraang Miyerkules ay nagsalita sina Senador TG Guingona at dating Mayor Florante Gerdan ng Nueva Vizcaya sa mga estudyante ng Colegio de San Juan de Letran sa Intramuros, Manila. I SYMPATHIZE with the family of the late former Defense Secretary Angelo Reyes but, I am sorry to say, I cannot agree with some of his friends who are saying he was a hero and died with honor.
I am disturbed by these statements because I cannot see how someone who allegedly received a P50-million “pabaon” (send-off money) and a monthly “allowance” of P5 million can be considered a hero and a man of honor. Assuming that he didn’t receive those amounts, he still chose to remain silent amid all the graft and corruption happening in the military. Perhaps he is being called a hero by some of his peers who got a respite from the congressional investigations because of his death.
If Reyes was truly a man of honor and courage, he would have followed the dictates of his conscience, chosen the righteous path and revealed everything he knew about the scandals that happened during the Arroyo administration even if it meant going to jail with other government leaders who took part in defrauding our government.
The real heroes for me are the ordinary soldiers who continue to offer their lives for our country, despite the lack of supplies and equipment that the insatiable greed of some of their leaders cause.

Kaya Natin! Statement on Corruption at the AFP
We, the leaders of the Kaya Natin! Movement for Good Governance and Ethical Leadership, strongly condemn the “pabaon” system that has corrupted the leadership of the Armed Forces of the Philippines (AFP). The AFP, as an institution that supposedly protects the Filipino people and upholds the tenets of democracy, must remain opposed to any form of bribery, graft and corruption in any level within their ranks.
We continue to support the ongoing investigations being done by the Senate Blue Ribbon committee and the Department of Justice. We hope that these investigations will lead to the prosecution and eventual conviction of the perpetuators of these crimes.
We continue to believe that there are still many in the AFP whose integrity is unblemished and who continue to pursue honor and valor as men and women in service to the country. Let us continue to work with them to cleanse the ranks of the AFP of those who tarnish the name of the institution for their own personal interests.
Moreover, we strongly support and admire the courage shown by former state auditor Heidi Mendoza in her mission for truth and justice. We urge more well-meaning and patriotic Filipinos especially those in government to follow her lead and publicly reveal any information about graft and corruption happening in the country. We believe that it is only through the concerted efforts of good Filipinos like Mendoza that we can finally rid our country of corrupt and selfish leaders.
Let us always remember evil will prevail only when good men and women choose to do nothing.
